It is said that it takes 10 years to develop a great professional dancer. Whether it be in ballet, tap, jazz or modern it can take up to 10 years to develop the skills and talent that are needed for them to achieve a professional career in dance.
As a student 10 years can seem like a long time and as a result when dance students reach their senior year in high school it can be hard to chose what career choice and path is best for them.
There is the choice to go professional straight out of high school or to devote a few extra years to training and receive a college degree in dance. Each choice carries many benefits and drawbacks. Here is a quick look at some of those benefits and drawbacks.
Professional Dance Career. Professional dance careers can be hard to make it in. However, many students have a lot of time to develop their talent while hunting for that professional career choice. Taking this type of career path can develop independence, prolong a dance career and help dancer gain the experience and resume to achieve higher dance jobs. Professional dance career choices can be hard to find so many dancers choose to become established through college dance programs instead of going straight to professional dance programs.
College Dance Programs. College dance programs can eventually lead to professional dance careers but it takes 4 to 5 years to get there. If a college education and setting is important then this allows a dancer to refine their talent while getting a college education at the same point. This is a great choice for those dancers that could use a little bit of fine tuning on their talent and want to still pursue a career in dance afterwords. Many professional dancers have successfully completed a college dance program at a leading university and had a very successful dance career.
